About the Louvre Museum
The Louvre is one of the most visited museums in the world and a landmark of French cultural heritage. Long before becoming a museum, the building served as a medieval fortress and later as a royal residence for centuries. It opened to the public in 1793, in the aftermath of the French Revolution, and has since grown into one of the most extensive art collections on Earth, spanning civilizations and centuries under one roof.
What to See
Highlights include Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, alongside major works such as Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People and David’s The Coronation of Napoleon. The museum’s Egyptian antiquities collection is also among the largest outside Cairo. With the audio guide, you can move through the galleries at your own pace while learning the story behind each piece.
“Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.” — Leonardo da Vinci
